The Ceasefire Oregon Educational Foundation will be holding a Gun Turn-In event as part of Crime Prevention Month here in Portland on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 10AM to 2PM at the Benton Parking Lot at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
All guns, working or not working, will be accepted at the Turn-In with NO questions asked. Each person turning in a firearm will receive a $50 Fred Meyer gift certificate for each workable firearm or a $5 Burgerville certificate for all non-working firearms. Ammunition and BB guns will also be accepted.
For the last 15 years, the Ceasefire Oregon Educational Foundation has collected over 7,500 guns at the Turn-Ins they sponsor. Through advertising and press coverage of the Turn-Ins, they have raised awareness of the risks and responsibilities of gun ownership, including the importance of safe storage.
"Don’t let your family feel the impact of gun violence," said Julie Wheeler, one of the faithful volunteers for the education foundation, "the statistics show that a gun in the home is much more likely to be used against you instead of to protect you - we hope that many people take advantage of this opportunity to make their homes and communities safer. Furthermore, this is not about the Second Amendment; we just want those unwanted and unwarranted firearms away from where they can cause harm - in some cases, fatal harm."
WHY DO IT?
• The gun you turn in will never get into the wrong hands which means you will help reduce the number of gun accidents, suicides, and homicides.
• The gun you turn in will never be part of a terrible accident because you have young curious children at your home.
• The gun you turn in will never be used in a reckless suicide attempt because someone in your family or a friend or neighbor is suffering from depression.
• You would rather have a gift certificate than the gun!
This event is hosted by the Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation, the City of Portland Mayor’s Office, and the Portland Police Bureau. The Gun Turn-in is part of Crime Prevention Month here in Portland.
