GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. Presents at the International Symposium of Field Measurements

The presentations highlighted GZA's work over the last five years in New York City with tunnel planning, design and construction.

Oct. 13, 2011 - PRLog -- Douglas Roy, PE and Charles George of GZA GeoEnvironmental’s Manhattan, NY office recently gave presentations based on their work with New York City Tunnel projects at the 8th International Symposium on Field Measurements in Geo-Mechanics (FMGM) 2011 in Berlin Germany.

Roy is an Associate Principal and District Office Manager, of the New York City office. He presented his paper “Summary and Lessons Learned from New York City Tunneling Instrumentation.” George, an Assistant Project Manager, presented his paper entitled “Buoyancy Effect on Slightly Sloped Horizontal In-Place Inclinometer.” Both articles were published in the proceedings.

The presentations and papers highlighted GZA’s work over the last five years in New York City with tunnel planning, design and construction. “Several major tunneling and underground construction projects have taken place in New York since approximately 2005. These projects were undertaken to address the long pent-up demand for additional commuter rail and subway service within Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. The three most notable major projects are East Side Access, the No. 7 Line Extension and Second Avenue Subway. The New York City area’s biggest transportation agency, the Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) is the owner of these three projects. The density of existing infrastructure, the number of stakeholders and access limitations make the installation and monitoring of instruments for these tunnel construction projects particularly challenging,” said Roy.

“We congratulate Doug and Charles on being invited to present at such a prestigious industry conference,” said William R. Beloff, President and CEO of GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. “In their work with the Metropolitan Transportation Agency Doug and Charles have created unique specification and contractual practices in handling the procurement, monitoring and installation of instrumentation. We applaud them for sharing their expertise.”
