By: Avril Benton When can you begin to teach your dog to sit? Regardless how old your dog is; he can easily learn to sit. Keep in mind dog is a smart creature. However when your dog is still very young, you should be more patient, as small puppies are still curious at everything and have lesser attention compare with older dogs. To prevent your little one from becoming bored, keep the session brief and do the teaching on the next day. Here are the steps : Step 1. Call your dog's name, stand in front of him and make eye contact. Place the snack in your right hand. Step 2 Whilst your dog's attention is focused on the treat, hold the treat in your closed palm, a few inches over his nose; continue to slowly move the snack up over your dog's head toward his tail. Step 3 As the dog follow the snack with his eyes, he raises his head and lower his rear legs the ground. If the dog remains standing, gently push his back down. While he sits, immediately say : "sit" then the dog's name, like “Sit Daisy. Always make sure to say sit command and his name in the same order. Step 4 Repeat all the steps until the puppy can sit on command. Don’t forget when your dog sits on command, offer him plenty of praises such as “Good boy/girl” or “good dog”, pats on his head, and of course his favorite treat. Step 5 Let your pet shift from the sit position by using words "release" or "free" command. Step 6 You might repeat this process so your your dog could understand the command. But the session should take place not more than 5-10 minutes, otherwise your dog may get bored and lost his interest. Tips - Don’t keep your hand too high, or he might attempt to jump to reach the treat Follow this training prior to your dog's normal mealtime so the treat will be a more effective reward - Don’t give the treat to your dog until he obeys your command Providing compliments, pat on his head and rewarding are absolutely best strategy for the success of obedience training. If your puppy isn't getting it this time, don't reprimand him. Stop before both of you get bored and you may do it again the following day. To teach a dog to sit is just not something which occurs instantly. You and the puppy need to practice every day until he understands the command and giving treat is not required anymore. But obviously giving reward now and then isn’t a bad idea, in this way your dog will know that the command you give him is made for his own good.
