New Orleans marks the North American premiere of the film

The Sundance Award Winning Filmmakers behind the movie FUEL will screen what they are calling “the greatest uncoverup movie” of the decade when The Big Fix receives its North American premiere as the Opening night Film of the 22nd Annual New Orleans Film Festival. Directed by Louisiana native Josh Tickell and produced and co-directed by his wife and filmmaking partner Rebecca Harrell Tickell, the new film, The Big Fix is part daring journalism, part archival investigation and part eco-horror story.  The Big Fix premieres Friday October 14th at 845 pm at the Prytania Theatre with a second performance Wednesday October 19th at 7pm at the Challmette Movies.  For tickets http://neworleansfilmsociety.org/festival.  

Through scenes and interviews with scientists, government officials, journalists (including Rolling Stone’s Jeff Goodell who examined the Gulf spill in his article ‘The Poisoning”), activists (Peter Fonda, Amy Smart and Grammy-winner Jason Mraz who also contributed an original song),  attorneys (including New Orleans Toxic Tort attorney Stuart Smith) and Gulf States natives, The Big Fix recounts the events surrounding the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico and paints a disturbing picture of the aftermath of the largest oil spill in America’s history.  See The Big Fix official trailer here:

“We never intended to make this movie,” Josh Tickell said. “It was only after going home and being dumbstruck by the true level of destruction and the downplaying of the situation, that we picked up our cameras and began to document this unparalleled man-made disaster.”

Notably, The Big Fix explores the complicit behavior of the US government in the long-term use of the chemical dispersant, Corexit 9527, a known hemolitic (blood thinner). In a unexpected twist of fate, Co-Director/Producer Rebecca Harrell Tickell became severely ill after being exposed to the oil and Corexit mixture while filming. Her health struggle is cataloged in the film. According to Harrell Tickell, “Making this movie and living with the consequences changed everything I thought I knew about America.” Like many of the residents of the gulf south who have experienced blood in their urine, skin lesions, and other blood-related disorders, Harrell Tickell’s condition persists.

A rough cut of The Big Fix received critical acclaim earlier this year at its European Premiere as the only documentary in Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. European audiences were stunned to see evidence that suggests that the oil from the Macondo well site - is still leaking.
