Oct. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- RICHMOND, CA – OCTOBER 12, 2011: Lillie Mae Jones Plaza, named in honor of respected local activist and long-time Richmond resident, Lillie Mae Jones, celebrates its Grand Opening on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Development partners Community Housing Development Corporation (CHDC) and East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC) will welcome Ms. Jones, Mayor McLaughlin, new residents of the building, project funders and community supporters.

Located at 120 Macdonald Ave., the 26-unit residential building is a successful joint-venture partnership between CHDC and EBALDC. The building consists of one, two, three, and four bedroom units plus state-of-the-art amenities for environmental sustainability. Half of the units house people with disabilities who receive on-site social support. Residents enjoy a central courtyard, community and computer rooms, spaces for outdoor play and exercise, solar panels and energy efficient appliances.

Families moved into the building last month, including Reina Portillo, Jose Pedro Albarron Lopez, and their four daughters. For the past several years, the family had been moving between tiny short-term apartments until they were selected in the lottery for a four-bedroom unit at Lillie Mae Jones Plaza.  Ana, 20, the eldest daughter says, “We used to struggle a lot, and my mom would always think about how she would deal with all the payments, and she was always stressed…Now we actually have money to save, and it’s beautiful where we live, it’s relaxing.  You can feel the peacefulness here.”

“I’m proud of it.  It’s a beautiful building and it’s making a difference,” Lillie Mae Jones said of the new building, located just a few blocks from her own home.  Ms Jones began her advocacy and organizing work in the 1970’s getting people involved in community service and neighborhood beautification. She reached out to young people and her impact extends throughout the city of Richmond.
