TARZANA, CALIFORNIA October 18, 2011 — The Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD), one of the world’s largest organizations treating children with the state-of-the-art therapy, is hosting two free webinars called Moving Past Picky Eating during the month of October for parents of children with and without a developmental disability. Moving Past Picky Eating will broadcast live online on October 18, 2011 from 5 – 7 pm PST and October 21, 2011 from 12 – 2 pm PST.

The webinar will address the challenges of parents whose children suffer from picky eating and discuss strategies on how parents can move toward effective intervention through applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy.

“There is no accurate explanation for what causes picky eating. However, it is often viewed as a stage of childhood that is normally overcome with age,” says CARD Specialized Outpatient Services Managing Supervisor Katharine Gutshall, MA, BCBA. “This free webinar will address children’s nutrition, consumption behavior and power struggles by providing parents with strategies on how to move toward a healthier diet and aid their picky eaters in receiving the nutrition needed for healthy child growth and development.”

Research shows problems with food acceptance and picky eaters are commonly found in children on the autism spectrum. Picky eating, also known as selective or fussy eating, is defined as a restricted diet, where a child excludes a variety of foods.

Parents will learn about what constitutes picky eating versus a pediatric feeding disorder as well as research and possible treatment interventions.

Registration is required to attend the webinars. To register, contact Aenid Reyes at a.reyes@centerforautism.com.
