Oct. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- OAKLAND, Calif. (October 11, 2011) – Solio, leading developer of hand-held solar chargers and longtime iPhone-compatible brand, recently launched a new solar charger and battery back-up device just in time for the release of the iPhone 4S. Called the BOLT and boasting an integrated full-size USB port, it’s easier than ever to connect and charge the iPhone 4S: just plug the USB charging cable included with the iPhone 4S directly into the BOLT; no adapter tips are required.

Apple and Solio
For years Apple fans have powered their pursuits with the iPod, then the iPhone using Solio products. The Solio BOLT is the first solar charger to provide an output mode optimized specifically for charging Apple products. In “Apple charging” mode, the BOLT will charge the iPhone 4S just as quickly as when plugged into a wall outlet. The BOLT’s Lithium-Polymer battery holds a charge for up to a year, so you charge your iPhone 4S anytime, anywhere.

With the iPhone 4S’ 8-megapixel camera (1080p), a faster A5 processor, and a voice-activated “digital assistant” app, the need for back-up battery power has never been greater. A complete day in full sunlight charges the BOLT’s on-board 2000mAh battery. It’s ingenious design allows a pencil to be inserted into a central pivot point, making it possible to track the sun like a sundial. Simply point the BOLT towards the sun and rotate it until the pencil no longer casts a shadow.

The nuts and bolts
After dark the BOLT’s battery can be re-charged via its micro-USB port. From USB power, the battery charges in 4.5 hours. The BOLT utilizes a high temperature rated lithium ion-polymer battery. Unlike other battery chemistries, lithium-poly works perfectly for the high-heat of solar charging and Solio’s 60C specification means the heat of the sun never interrupts efficient solar charging. When the useful life of the rechargeable battery is over, the Solio BOLT battery is user-replaceable with just a few turns of a screwdriver.

The Solio Bolt is available now at RadioShack, Sprint, Amazon, and REI stores in the United States and Mountain Equipment Co-op in Canada. Also available at www.solio.com.
