Follow on Google News | Belfi, President of Blind Dog Rescue, Is Appointed To Philly’s Animal Care And Control TeamPhiladelphia Mayor Michael Nutter appointed Karen Belfi, President of Blind Dog Rescue Alliance, along with seven others, to the City's new Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT) board. ACCT will assume City’s animal control services.
By: Joanne Marsh Blind Dog Rescue Alliance Belfi founded the Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and providing homes for blind and visually impaired dogs across North America, in 2009. Previously, she volunteered in Siberian Husky and Northern Breed rescue work for more than a decade. ACCT’s bylaws, adopted on October 3, 2011, require that the Board is chaired by the Managing Director or his designee and consists of: the City Solicitor (or designee); the President of the City Council of Philadelphia (or designee); a representative of the Animal Advisory Committee; a veterinarian with prior animal shelter experience; a veterinarian with a broad range of experience; an individual with prior animal rescue experience; a community representative with prior general business experience; an individual with feral cat expertise; and two representatives of shelter agencies. Belfi fulfills the position of the individual with prior animal rescue experience. Others appointed to the Board are: Garrett Elwood; Dr. Matt Montresor; Christina Fuoco; Beth Monahan; Debbie Boyd; Robin Ackerman; and Marc Peralta. Managing Director Richard Negrin has designated Brian Abernathy, Chief of Staff to the Managing Director, to Chair the Board. City Solicitor Shelly Smith has designated Jennifer Burns, chief of Staff to the Solicitor, to serve on the Board. Council President Anna C. Verna has appointed Councilman Jack Kelly to serve on the Board. Belfi is a RN at Pennsylvania Hospital and is studying to receive a Masters of Science in Nursing at Holy Family University. # # # A 501c(3) nonprofit, dog rescue group of volunteers throughout the US and Canada dedicated to advocating for blind and visually impaired dogs by rescuing dogs in shelters, helping blind dog owners, and educating the public.
