Blastomycosis Exposed in New Online Video

The IAQ Video Network produces another educational video about the health effects due to exposure to microbial pathogens and environmental hazards.

Oct. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health.  The latest educational video discusses the threat to human health due to Blastomycosis infections caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis fungi.

Blastomyces dermatitidis can be found in moist soil enriched with decomposing organic debris.  During specific conditions of humidity, temperature and nutrition, the fungus can grow and produce infecting particles, known as spores.

The spores become airborne when the soil in which the fungus is growing is disturbed. This aerosol is then inhaled by humans or other mammals. Activities that involve disrupting the soil are likely to put a person at increased risk of acquiring blastomycosis. Persons in areas with endemic disease with exposures to wooded sites (including farmers, forestry workers, hunters and campers) are at greater risk of exposure to this fungal pathogen.

“In endemic regions, it may not be possible to completely avoid exposure to the fungus. However, those who are immunocompromised may consider avoiding wooded areas where and when the fungus is prevalent,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video.  “Fortunately, Blastomycosis is not known to be transmitted from person to person.”
