Interview by Helen Winsor, Technology IQ
Dan Summers, Information Security Specialist for the Royal Mail Group joins Helen Winsor of Technology IQ to discuss the evolution of future threats in cyber security.
Technology IQ: Thanks very much for joining us ahead of the event. Now, if we could start by understanding your role within Royal Mail. I understand that you’re the Information Security Specialist, so what exactly does this involve, Dan?
D Summers: I joined the team in late June and basically I’ve been researching the sources and technologies available to provide us more threat intelligence. So looking to correlate that with vulnerability, management activity, supporting the [unclear] project and also looking to see how actionable threat intelligence would sit with the developments that we’re putting in place in the team. So looking for additional controls and understanding how we can look at future threats and embed the technologies we need into the business.
Technology IQ: I also believe that you were named the UK’s first cyber champion. Can you tell us a bit about this and how you came to receive the award?
D Summers: Basically, there’s a shortage of information security professionals in the industry. The cyber security challenge has been set up to identify new talent, promote information security as a career choice and it’s sponsored by private sector and Government. So they set up the challenge, which is several streams, several competitions covering network defence, penetration testing, forensics, culminating in a grand final in March.
