Follow on Google News | Making this Thanksgiving a special memoryAside from more traditional activities that focus on others during this season, here are some fun, less traditional methods for helping others.
By: Cathleen Jones Not a question you hear everyday, but this house party will focus on those less fortunate. The “price” to attend: two frozen turkeys for the Great Thanksgiving Banquet to be hosted by the Redwood Gospel Mission on Wednesday, November 23. The Mission kitchen ovens are already busy roasting the hundreds of turkeys that will be de-boned and frozen over the next 6 weeks to serve more than 3,000 hot turkey dinners that day. Another family plans their “Warm Coat” party where guests will bring new or gently used jackets and coats for the needy. During the evening, the hosts will share about their involvement with the poor and homeless. The ideas do not stop there! Corky Cramer is a tennis coach and his team of players holds an annual pledge drive they call “Serving Turkeys”. The kids get pledges from friends and family members. Then, Corky clocks their serves on a speed gun and the supporters pay per mile based on the recorded speed of the serve. Proceeds are used to purchase turkeys. Do you have a favorite sport or activity that could be used to raise money or items to bless the needy? Is your church, classroom or neighborhood looking for a way to give back this Thanksgiving? # # # Founded in 1963, the Redwood Gospel Mission mobilizes our community to minister to the needy so lives are transformed. Groups/individuals can design meaningful opportunities to serve the poor and needy. Emergency Shelters, Residential Recovery, a Thrift Store, and Events are all under the umbrella of Redwood Gospel Mission. End
