Oct. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- SAVAGE, LAKEVILLE AND ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA - Lakeville and St. Paul MN braces professional Dr. Trudy Bonvino, who offers adult and pediatric orthodontics treatment, reminds students to make smart food choices for improved dental health now that they are back in school.

Grabbing real fruits instead of those chewy fruit-flavored snacks, and steering clear of sticky foods that can break orthodontic braces are a good idea, said Bonvino. Even if children aren't in teeth braces, these chewy, sticky foods are unhealthy for teeth because foods that stick to teeth when combined with saliva form an acid and can eventually lead to cavities.

"If you bring your lunch to school every day, remember that just because items are labeled on packaging as 'fruit snacks,' it doesn't mean they are fruit," said a Burnsville Orthodontics expert Dr. Bonvino (http://www.cosmoortho.com/).

Choosing healthy foods instead of unhealthy foods helps ensure a lasting, beautiful smile, she says. Good dental hygiene also helps. Portable toothbrushes are on the market today that include toothpaste in the brush, and are packaged in a fashion that makes them easy to stow in a purse, laptop case or backpack, she said. But if brushing after meals at school isn't possible and students aren't able to chew sugarless gum after a meal, avoiding chewy, sticky foods will go a long way toward promoting good oral health.

There also are foods that students should gravitate toward because they actually have a cleansing effect on the teeth. Apples and pears help keep plaque off teeth. Cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and cucumbers help remove particles of food from the mouth, which helps reduce plaque formation.
