Falls are not Inevitable!

What causes us to fall? Read about activities that can help decrease our risk of falls

Oct. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- Falls are not inevitable!!

Falls are not inevitable!! We lose at least 1% bone and 1% muscle every year from age 50 on if we remain as active as we were when we were 50. How many of us are that active now?? Falls happen because we trip on our feet because we don’t pick them up, we drag them; or we misstep and haven’t got the strength or ability to ‘catch’ ourselves. For these reasons, and many more, physical activity is very important to help reduce our risk of falls. There are many other risk factors that may make us more pre-disposed to falling; and some of these are:
•   Complications due to medication
•   Decreased vision
•   Alcohol use
•   Wearing slippers
•   Having scatter rugs in our room.
There are activities that we can do to help decrease our risk of falls and these are:
•   Increase the amount of walking we do – get a pedometer, a step counter, and see if we can increase our steps towards 10,000 every day.
•   Increase our walking speed, safely; because the slower we walk the more at risk of falls we are. The slower pace is often an indication of decreased strength.
•   Increase our general strength, especially our core – back and tummy muscles – and the muscles in our hips, knees and ankles.
•   Improve our flexibility – stand tall; stretch arms and legs through full range of motion, slowly, and every day.
•   Practice getting up and down from a chair without the need of our hands pushing on the arms of the chair or our lap; and slowly descending into the chair or toilet under control and not dropping down the last few inches.
