Arizona Unions Elect Top Leadership

Rebekah Friend, Martin Murphy, and James McLaughlin to head Arizona AFL-CIO
 
Oct. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- PHOENIX, AZ - With unanimous acclamation from a cheering crowd of union delegates and guests, Arizona AFL-CIO Executive Director and Secretary-Treasurer Rebekah Friend, Arizona AFL-CIO President Martin "Buzz" Murphy, and Arizona AFL-CIO Executive Vice President James J. McLaughlin were elected as the state's top leaders of the Arizona union movement.

Friend and Murphy were re-elected to their second term in office while McLaughlin was elected to his first term during the state federation's 53rd biennial convention held in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, October 1, 2011.

For over 30 years, Rebekah Friend has been a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and a committed advocate for working families.

Today, Friend is one of the only female executive directors to head a state labor union federation in the country. She became the first woman to be elected president of the Arizona AFL-CIO in 2002 and the state federation’s first female Secretary/Treasurer in 2007.

Martin "Buzz" Murphy is serving his second term as President of the Arizona AFL-CIO. He was first elected to the position in August 2007 after serving as Executive Vice President of the state federation beginning in March of that year.

Murphy is currently serving his third term as Business Manager/Financial Secretary of Ironworkers Local Union 75.

Jim McLaughlin is the Executive Vice President of the Arizona AFL-CIO.

McLaughlin is President of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 99, an 18,000-member union that spans the entire state of Arizona.

Convention delegates also elected fourteen union leaders to the Arizona AFL-CIO Executive Council. They are: Harley Hembd - American Federation of Government Employees, Mary Lou Pavoggi - American Postal Workers Union, Robert Hannah - National Association of Letter Carriers, Jim Watson - International Association of Machinists, Joel Bell - International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Andrew Marshall - International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Walter Allen - Office and Professional Employees International Union, Greg Hines - United Transportation Union, Phil McNally - United Association, Paul Castaneda - Communication Workers of America, Brian Clark - Association of Flight Attendants, Fernando Terrazas - United Steel Workers, Betty Guardado - Unite Here, and Roman Ulman - American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees.
