Oct. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Hindus worldwide are getting ready to celebrate Vijayadashmi, literally translated as the “victorious tenth day”, which falls on 6th October this year. Celebration of Vijayadashami, also known as Dassera, follows nine days of Hindus’ fasting and religious observance of Navratri. This day marks the victory of Hindus’ female Deity, Durga over the evil Mahishasura after nine days of Her raging battle. The idols of the female Deity worshipped devotedly during the nine days acquire a lot of divine energy. These charged idols are reverently immersed in flowing water on Vijayadashami to spread the divine energy far and wide, to share the spiritual benefit with the surrounding communities.

Vijayadashami also commemorates Hindu’s revered incarnation, Rama emerging victorious by slaying the demon king Ravana. This victory is celebrated by burning effigies symbolizing Ravana.

In the Hindu epic Mahabharat, the righteous five Pandava brothers ended their exile on Vijayadashmi day by collecting their weapons out of a Shami tree and defeating the unrighteous Kaurava brothers in battle. This victory of Righteousness is celebrated with holy verses and rituals of worshipping the Shami tree, worshipping weapons or implements used in one’s trade, crossing a geographic boundary and worshipping the Deity Aparajita for blessings to remain undefeated (aparajit). In some parts of India, leaves of the Apta tree are offered by the young to the old people signifying the gold brought back by victorious Maratha warriors.

For the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami, Forum for Hindu Awakening sends greetings to all supporters and followers of Hinduism (Sanatan Dharma) and invites everyone to understand the spiritual significance of Vijayadashami and celebrate it in its spiritual essence. We also appeal to Hindus to actively dispel misconceptions about Vijayadashami’s Deities and rituals, such as propagated by films like ‘Sita Sings the Blues’, art by M. F. Husain and writings by academicians like Wendy Doniger.
