Sept. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- After an extensive 18 month testing regime, the maintenance team at the major UK attraction has opted to switch its woodcare specification to the highly translucent woodstain, on the basis of its exceptional durability, all weather protection, longevity of finish – and environmental features.
Sadolin Ultra’s formulation allows the natural beauty of wood to shine through, highlighting its natural features – with the reassurance of up to seven years’ protection.
Available in 16 shades, the system delivers superior colour retention and has the ability to withstand the harshest weather conditions.
Trials of Sadolin Ultra started in early spring 2010, when the zoo was in the process of overhauling its Miniature Monkey enclosure and the large ‘all weather’ visitor viewing area had been stripped right back to bare wood.
Tony Ankers, who leads the in-house maintenance team at Chester Zoo, said: “We wanted a versatile and hardwearing translucent woodcare product that would keep all our woodwork looking good in all weathers and which wouldn’t need to be re-applied every twelve months.”
“We’ve had no end of problems with other woodstains and varnishes in the past. After around a year they’ve usually started to wear away and look shabby, leaving the wood with minimal protection, or cracks and flakes have appeared, leaving us with little option other than to strip the woodwork right back and start again.”
Eighteen months on, Tony and his team are delighted with the way Sadolin Ultra has maintained its appearance and level of timber protection.  Tony said: “Everything still looks in excellent condition, even after the extreme weather conditions last winter. In the future when we eventually need to give the timber a little attention, a quick maintenance coat of Sadolin Ultra is all that should be required.
“Now we’re using Sadolin Ultra it looks certain that we’ll be able to extend our maintenance schedules significantly.”
The use of Sadolin Ultra not only supports maintenance cycles, but helps the smooth-running of the zoo overall.
Of appeal to the team at Chester Zoo is Sadolin Ultra’s new alkyd formulation that requires less solvent, achieving 2010 VOC Compliance, without any compromise on quality. Furthermore, Sadolin has also been working with The CarbonNeutral® company since 2002 to offset energy use in the manufacturing process.
Tony added: “We have to ensure that we don’t disturb the animals’ routines and habitats any more than is absolutely necessary.
“Uprooting them in order to redecorate or refurbish living quarters can be traumatic for them and because of the important breeding programmes we have here, there are few windows of opportunity to carry out this type of work.
“Because the welfare of our animals is our number one concern we obviously can’t use products containing dangerous substances or unnecessarily high levels of solvent.
“By insisting on coatings with a low solvent content we are not just helping to ensure their safety, we’re also helping to protect the tropical plants that provide a natural habitat in their enclosures.”
