Sept. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- Altoona, PA - The Pennsylvania Game Commission and Professionals Auto Body are advising Central Pennsylvania residents to slow down while driving after sundown to avoid run-ins with whitetail deer and other active wildlife during the fall and winter seasons.  Studies have shown that deer are at their most active between the months October through December due to the breeding and hunting seasons and that over the past two years, there have been an estimated 2.3 million deer-related accidents nationally. These accidents have caused close to $1.2million in property damage and 120 fatalities.

Professionals Auto Body, with two local automotive collision repair centers, advises residents and customers on some simple tips to help avoid a deer collision while driving this season.

•   Be attentive in the early morning and evening hours when deer are prone to be the most active.
•   Use your high beams while driving at night, when possible, which will help illuminate the reflection of the deer’s eyes from a farther distance.
•   If you see a deer on the road, brake firmly and do not swerve. Swerving can cause the deer to be confused as to where to run and increases the likelihood of losing control of your vehicle. Swerving can also cause one to strike a tree or guardrail, which would change your deductible from a comprehensive (lower) to a collision (higher) claim.
•   Remember to slow down when approaching a deer on the road and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away.
•   Be alert and drive with caution when proceeding through a deer crossing zone. These zones are usually marked with a leaping deer on yellow signs along the highway.
•   Always wear your seat belt! Most people are injured in deer related collisions because they were not wearing a seatbelt.
•   Deer seldom roam or run alone, so stay alert if one has already crossed. Chances are a few others are close by and may run across the road as well.

If you are unfortunate to strike a deer with your vehicle, do not touch the animal! A frightened deer or animal can hurt you if it’s attempting to move after an accident. The best course of action is to move your vehicle to the shoulder of the road, if possible, and notify law enforcement and a local collision repair center with towing capabilities. The authorities and/or the tow truck operator will contact the Game Commission or another entity to remove the disabled animal. Professionals Auto Body adds that they have seen numerous deer damaged vehicles come into their shops with deer alert accessories attached to them. They advise that these accessories aren’t foolproof and will only alert a deer of your presence and won’t necessarily scare or drive a deer away from your path.
