Called Hackdays, these are closed events which take place within a business. They can bring people together from across a number of functions – communications, strategy, marketing, and business support – along with IT developers.
The Hackday format allows for experimentation and co-creation. In one session, attendees will be coming up with new ideas for taking the business in a particular direction, working with the developers to create actual prototypes of how they might work. The projects and ideas which are generated by the Hackday will be stored on a secure extranet for subsequent development and full introduction into the business. The extranet also contains social networking functions for Hackday attendees to continue dialogue in and around their projects. The client retains their intellectual property at all times.
Running a Hackday is an ideal way for larger, more complex businesses to unite people under a shared vision and context, as well as a way to quickly develop new ideas within a confined, internal environment.
It is a concept which has proven to be extremely popular. Perera recently co-produced Book Hackday, an open event which united developers, user experience practitioners, and members of the publishing industry. The result was the development of 7 comprehensive projects in one day.
Paul Squires, Managing Director of Perini, said:
“Hackdays are becoming increasingly popular as a way to rapidly develop, prototype and test new ideas and new thinking. We are pleased to be one of the first organisations to bring the Hackday format into a business, bringing all of the benefits of the format but with the specific contexts and cultures that companies have. We are expecting powerful, compelling results.”
Helena Markou, Head of New Business at Perini, said:
“A hackday is the perfect event to kick-start innovation in a business. The co-development of ideas and products at such a rapid pace is really compelling , at a time when speed and efficiency are critical success factors.”
