By: Planet Aid The 2010 edition highlights the organization’ Planet Aid’s worldwide mission is to help poor and disadvantaged citizens improve their lives and those of future generations. Assistance is provided to communities in some of the poorest regions in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Funded projects have established and operated schools for street children and orphans, provided teacher and vocational training, and helped prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and provided care for those already infected. Other projects assisted small-scale farmers to increase crop yields and income, enhanced environmental protection, helped fight malaria, and provided nutritious meals for vulnerable children and adults in impoverished communities. In the U.S., Planet Aid collected 95 million pounds of used clothing and shoes last year. With over 13,000 donation bins hosted by small and large businesses, faith-based organizations, schools and universities, community centers, and nonprofit groups, Planet Aid operates in several metropolitan areas across the nation. Planet Aid sells the clothing it collects to distributors, who make it available to customers in the U.S. and worldwide at a low cost. The net proceeds are then donated to help people in lesser-developed countries meet basic needs. Since its inception, Planet Aid has donated over $68 million to international aid and development projects and collected more than 650 million pounds of recyclable clothing and shoes. In 2010, Planet Aid distributed 78 percent of its allocated funds to program services, which included U.S. clothing collection and habitat protection, international exchange, training and education. Fundraising and development received 13 percent of funds and 9 percent was allocated to general and administrative expenses. Located in Elkridge, MD, southeast of Baltimore, Planet Aid is an independent nonprofit and recognized as a tax-exempt charity under IRS code 501(c)(3). To further its purpose of relief and development, Planet Aid works with several other international charitable and relief organizations. It is a member of the Swiss-based Federation Humana People to People. The Federation comprises 32 national associations, effectively uniting more than 330 projects worldwide. End
