Based on the 2009 U.S. Census, more than 95,320 Westchester residents, about 10% of the population, are not sure where their next meal is coming from. Of that population, 33%, or approximately 33,000, are children. Hunger can permanently affect the development of a child’s mental, emotional, physical and/or social skills necessary for work and career in adulthood. Children who are hungry are more susceptible to illnesses and hospitalization than children who are not hungry.
“For every dollar donated to the Food Bank, we can purchase $4 worth of nutritious food to feed a hungry child. Every donation helps,” said Christina Rohatynskyj, Executive Director for the Food Bank for Westchester. “This annual event is critical in helping support the fight against childhood hunger here.”
