Whether male or female most people at some time would like to remove unwanted hair from part of their body.  Here we discuss all of the common types and we share your stories and questions.

Shaving

This is probably the most common method. Usually because we are introduced to shaving at a young age when we secretly “borrow” our father’s or brother’s razor or electric shaver. Although it’s their fault for leaving it lying around in the first place.

Top-Tip: The secret is to shave when your skin is cool and calm.

Advantages: Cheap, quick and painless.
Disadvantages: Sharp stubble re-growth, scratchy, razor burn, irritation

Waxing

This is possibly the fastest method to remove unwanted hair. A warm and very sticky wax is spread onto your skin and a cloth or paper is placed over the top. When the wax cools a little as it solidifies around the hairs and grips them. The waxy paper is then removed pulling the hairs out of your skin with it. The best method is to pull off the wax strip as fast as possible. There are two reasons for this. Firstly the wax is able to hold onto the hair better as there is no time for the wax to lose grip of the hair. The second reason is the faster you pull – the least painful it will be.  Waxing can be carried out at home or in salons. Some waxes are waters soluable and not made from wax as such, but they work in the same way.

Top Tip: Use plenty of wax and at the right temperature. Pull the wax strip off quickly or get a friend to do it for you. See Waxing – Pain relief below.

Advantages: Good results, slow re-growth
Disadvantages: Can be painful, (you can always use a topical analgesic)

Plucking

Using tweezers we can tackle those odd or lone hairs without any other aids. Plucking or tweezing is the most selective way of removing unwanted hair. This is possibly the best way to create an exacting eyebrow line.

Top Tip: Don’t stand too close to the mirror, you might bash it when you pluck.

Advantages: Cheap, easy and you can be very selective.
Disadvantages: Slow progress for anything other that very small areas.

Epilators

Well this is rather the same as plucking. A series of spinning disks grip the hairs and remove unwanted hair by plucking them out. The advantage of this method is that it is much faster than tweezing although you can’t be as selective.

Electrolysis

This is more costly but permanent way to remove unwanted hair. There are home electrolysis kits available but for large, deep hair roots you are better off going to a beauty specialist. The technique requires a fine needle which is applied to the hair follicle. The tiny electric current will then heat and permanently destroy the hair follicle.

Tips: Find a recommended and reputable salon.

Advantages: Permanent and instant.
Disadvantages: Cost, should really be carried out by an expert.

Pain Relief

If you pluck or wax then you’ll know how painful it can be. One of the best ways of preventing pain when plucking or waxing is to use a topical analgesic. Basically, this is rub-on cream or gel that will desensitize your skin, but only where you rub it in. Different strengths of analgesic gel or cream are available depending on your personal choice. We would also recommend that you use an analgesic that has anti-inflammatory properties; this will help your skin to settle and smooth down quickly after plucking or waxing.

As with most products you get what you pay for. Beware of analgesics that boast high-strength but are very cheap and also you don’t want your skin to react.  All products on the market have undergone thorough testing and are quite safe for you to use. How effective they are may depend on your skin type or even your heritage. Ask your family and friends what they use to remove unwanted hair.
