Oct. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- While in Paris, France Julie Ann Segal visited the Louvre. She was stunned by the number of people running in to see this small image of the Mona Lisa. The piece is so famous in the world. It is funny how many people flock to see the Mona Lisa, some of which are unaware of the actual size of the painting. The portrait itself measures about 30" by 21" and is oil on poplar panel. This piece took Da Vinci four years to complete and was painted in the early 1500's. Since then, it has sparked several debates and theories about the mysteries hidden behind Mona Lisa's smile.

A few interesting theories are centered around who she is and her "smile". Some think it is not a smile at all, but an expression of inner pleasure. The slight smoky blurred edges around her mouth, called "sfumato" which is a painting technique, adds to the mystery of whether it is truly a smile or if it looks like a smile because of this shadow around her mouth.

Da Vinci claimed that the Mona Lisa was his finest accomplishment, and he carried it with him everywhere he went. One of the elements in the portrait is the pyramidal composition, which was very uncommon for most portraits in the 1500's. Most portraits during that time were profiles rather than front on. Painting in this composition was very innovative at the time and has set many trends in painting.

As for who Mona Lisa is there are theories ranging from an image of Mary Magdalene, the Duchess of Milan, and even the feminine version of Da Vinci himself. Julie Ann commented, "It is such an alluring piece, and a well done painting. Although it maybe a mystery, it is Leonardo Da Vinci at his finest."
