Fish tanks for bettas: setting up a betta aquarium

Debates have been discussed as to whether they should be kept in a small jar or in a bigger tank. But to answer in a more detailed opinion, in order to set up the perfect fish tank for bettas, one must understand the betta’s natural habitat.

Bettas originally are from the shallow waters of Thailand, which is formerly known as Siam. Hence the other name of betta fish is Siamese fighting fish. They were captured and bred by the Siams before so they could fight bettas with other bettas. The betta fish can also be found in parts of China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. They usually proliferate in rice paddies, moving streams and shallow ponds. What is often overlooked in the way bettas live is the temperature of the water they mostly swim in.

Where the bettas are from, the weather is warm. Bettas are tropical fish so when you set up your fish tank for betta, make sure that the water temperature is warm.  Usually it is 80 degrees since bettas love to thrive on heat. And so they have the tendency to go listless when the water temperature drops below 75 degrees. It is highly recommended that when you set up your betta tank, there must be a thermometer and a heater to make sure your water temperature stays in the way the betta loves.

Though bettas so okay in a water with dissolved oxygen that is low, that does not give you any reassurance that they can indeed live with less oxygen. They need oxygen the way other fishes do. The water that keeps the bettas healthy should be warm and soft. And it has to be neutral to slightly acidic PH. Water movement shouldn’t be too fast since your  betta cannot be able to swim in a water with a fast current. Make sure that the filter that you buy only produces soft waves or current in the water.

Only one male must be kept in the betta aquarium unless you want a betta tragedy to happen. If you have female bettas, then they can be kept together since they won’t fight each other. There are only few fishes who can share the tank with bettas. This is due to the fact that bettas are very aggressive and solitary breed of fish. They are very vain to a point that they will attack any fish that looks more handsome and colourful than they are

In decorating your fish tank for bettas, you must also put only silk or live plants. If you use plastic plants, then the hard material will hurt the fins of your bettas. And this is something you wouldn’t want to happen, right? You also can put some rocks that shape like caves because bettas love to swim through anything smooth and cave-looking. They love the thrill of the hunt and they need to feel this feel of environment in their tanks to keep them happy.
