• Working jointly with RDSO, DLW on New Locomotives, the WDG5
Delhi, India, 26th September, 2011 – Through its subsidiary, EMD Locomotive Technologies Private Limited, Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. (EMD), one of the leading global locomotive manufacturers, is expanding its base in India to better serve Indian Railways by bringing the latest technology to the country. In a landmark achievement for Indian Railways, a complete high-horsepower locomotive design has been completed by Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) and Diesel Locomotive Works, (DLW) of Indian Railways, with the support of EMD. This diesel locomotive has an output of 5500 bhp, which will make it the strongest diesel locomotive ever to run on the Indian rail network. In combination with its record high tractive effort of 560 KN, it can pull significantly more load at higher speeds, thus enabling Indian Railways to increase the system throughput in the rail network.
The WDG5 locomotive design is a significant enhancement over the existing high horsepower diesel locomotives currently in use on the Indian Railways. It includes electronic fuel injection, radial grids and high adhesion, lightweight fabricated bogies. It has modern driver interface and crew-friendly features, such as an air conditioned cab and toilet, which is another first for the Indian Railways’ fleet. This locomotive is the only one that incorporates salient features from International Union of Railways (UIC) and Association of American Railroads (AAR) crashworthiness criteria and is a major step forward in safety.
EMD also provides service support to Indian Railways’ locomotive facilities at multiple locations across India, with a network of dedicated service support personnel. Locations include: Hubli, Sabarmati, Jodhpur, Siliguri, Lucknow, Gooty, Krishnarajpuram , Tughlaqabad, Pune, Itarsi and Raipur.
EMD will participate in IREE in Delhi, with its theme: IR – Moving into the Next Orbit, which collaborates well with the spirit and philosophy of EMD.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Glen Lehmann, Chief Marketing Officer, International, Electro Motive Diesel, said, “EMD is committed to supporting Indian Railways in the development of future technology. We have great confidence that the WDG5 will be the locomotive of tomorrow for Indian Railways.”
