Dr. Carol M. Swain's New Book Examines America's Religious Foundation and Calls Christians to Political Action

SALEM, Va. - Dr. Carol M. Swain, a Roanoke College graduate and well-known author and professor, offers a conservative perspective on America's political landscape in her sixth book, which landed on bookshelves nationwide this summer.

In Be the People: A Call to Reclaim American's Faith and Promise, Swain draws on her training in political science and law to thoughtfully examine the religious significance of the founding of our nation and the deceptions she believes have infiltrated our daily lives. Swain combined her training as a social scientist with a biblical perspective while writing. She provides action points at the end of each chapter for the people of this country to make the political system more responsive.

Swain is a professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., a native of the Roanoke region and a past member of the Roanoke College Board of Trustees where she was the second African American Board member. In her time at as a student at Roanoke College, Swain studied criminal justice and worked often with Dr. Bill Hill, who is now director of the Henry H. Fowler Public Policy Program and professor emeritus in the public affairs department at the College. Swain says Hill introduced her to conservative thinkers.

"Carol Swain's Be the People is a unique call for citizen action, a review of American foundational understandings and current public policies, and a Christian evangelical testimony," Hill said. "Clearly written for a broad audience, it is still based in a thorough command of empirical literature and is fully documented and supplemented with teaching hints."

Swain speaks highly of her time at Roanoke. "Roanoke College gave me enormous self confidence about my ability to make a difference in the world," she said.

Swain's book quotes John R. Turbyfill, a Roanoke graduate, past chairman of the college's Board and active college service leader, for whom the campus' back quad is named.

Swain is passionate about empowering others to confidently raise their conservative voices. She started writing Be The People in the summer of 2009 as she grew more concerned about the conditions in the country and became aware that a large number of Americans were deceived, noting that a large amount of Americans claim to be Christian, but the majority do not live their lives in a Christian manner.

Swain hopes the book will make readers aware of issues and uncover the political deception that is shaping morals, social policies and culture. She dedicated the book to the American people.

"We are at a tipping point in this country, and this book is a call for we, the people, to take responsibility for the nation." said Swain. "If people are not exercising that power it will be taken away from them."

Though this is Swain's sixth book, it is her first one written for a popular press audience. Be The People was released in June, and since then, Swain has promoted the book nationally.
