Hold on to your buckets and spades and tie down those windbreakers. The Zapcats are back in Newquay for a weekend of high-speed power-boat thrills and spills at one of the UK’s most famous surfing beaches. Marking the 10th Anniversary of the National Zapcat Championships, this year’s penultimate round of the competition will take place on Newquay’s Fistral Beach throughout Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October, with twenty boats set to battle it out in the waves at speeds of up to 75mph.
Often described as motocross on water, Zapcat Racing is a visual feast for spectators of all ages with outstanding displays of high-speed racing, huge death-defying airs and technical manoeuvres. The racing kicks off at 12:30pm on Friday 30 September along with a live music event, supported by Carlsberg, to showcase local bands and add to the adrenalin-fuelled atmosphere.
Saturday 1 October will then see the final round of the Championships where not only the Newquay Grand Prix winners will be decided but also the Championship winners including the Surf, Mixed, Rookie and Team Champion categories, in addition to the Celtic Cup.
Nick Webb, Events Manager for the International Surf Centre says:
“The Zapcat Racing Championships are a world class event and attract a great deal of attention due to the exhilarating show the racing teams put on. We’re delighted that the Zapcats have chosen to host their penultimate event in Newquay as Fistral provides the ideal atmosphere for the spectacular example of action-packed water sports at their very best.”
Sponsoring the event, Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) enabled organisers to host the event for another year in Newquay. BID Manager Eve Wooldridge says:
“Newquay BID is delighted to be supporting the Zapcat Racing Championships and we are thrilled that Newquay has another opportunity to host such a fantastic event that brings in the crowds with first class entertainment. Zapcat racing is a perfect event for Newquay and Fistral Beach, with its reputation for hosting world class water sports events, so we’re really excited to see what this year’s event brings.”
To close the championships, the racing will be followed by a black tie function at the Hotel Victoria, in Newquay, where racers, as well as visitors and spectators, are invited to attend an awards ceremony and closing party. Tickets are £35.00, including dinner and a complimentary glass of wine.

Note to Editors
Zapcat Racing was created in the UK as a one-design Championship format in 2001 however; the origins of the sport go back another 10 years with the unofficial racing of surf rescue craft in the Southern Hemisphere.
