Sept. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Beverly Hills, CA – “The nose is the most prominent facial feature, so just a slight alteration can greatly change a person’s appearance,” says Dr. Stephen Pincus, a board certified facial plastic surgeon who practices in Beverly Hills, CA, specializing in primary rhinoplasties and revision rhinoplasty.

"Most plastic surgeons will agree that the nose is the most challenging part of the body to work on and to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result," says Dr. Pincus. A subspecialty of sorts has emerged, composed of revision rhinoplasty specialists, facial plastic surgeons who focus on fixing the mistakes of other doctors, or in helping their patients to achieve the look they wanted in the first place. Common problems with primary rhinoplasties include an exaggerated, “scooped” look, a nose made too small for the face or nostrils which are left asymmetric. Excess cartilage may be removed, resulting in an unsatisfactory outcome.

“There are many factors that can impact the results of a rhinoplasty, including the original deformity, the expertise of the surgeon, the skin type, the postoperative care and of course the patient’s own expectations,” says Dr. Pincus.

What is a “perfect nose”?
"The ideal nose is generally considered to have a well-defined tip which projects slightly above the plane of the remainder of the nose when seen in profile," says Dr. Pincus. "Women usually prefer a slight slope over the remainder of the nose, whereas men generally prefer a strong straight profile. Also, the angle at which the nose is tilted upward also varies. The ideal male nose shows an angle of 90° to 100° between the lip and nasal tip, while the female has an angle of 100° to 120°. Taller people require less rotation to avoid excessive “nostril show.” While ideal aesthetics are always kept in mind, it is most important to have a nose that is natural in appearance and fits the individual."

“As with any plastic surgery procedure, the patient should have a realistic approach to what is achievable, and to clearly communicate their needs with the surgeon” says Dr. Pincus. “The more specific you can be in the exact details of shape, size and symmetry that you desire, the easier it is for the surgeon to comment on what he or she can do.”
