Also known as 'laser cut' and 'sidewinder' keys, high-security vehicle keys operate the mechanical portion of a lock through the use of side-milling instead of the traditional edge-cuts seen on older models. Examples of vehicles that utilize high-security keys include, among others, Acura, Honda, Lexus, and Subaru. Another type of high-security automotive key is the Tibbe key, historically used by Jaguar but now appearing in certain Ford models.

Once the mechanical portion of the key has been cut to operate the lock, most high-security keys also utilize a transponder chip imbedded in the head of the key that must be programmed to the vehicle's on-board computer using special diagnostic equipment. If the transponder is not properly programmed, the vehicle cannot be operated.
