Sept. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- No one would deny that the economy has hurt businesses, schools and families.  Recent budget cuts have affected the Jefferson County school system causing massive cuts in funding to local schools.  This directly threatens the jobs of administrators, teachers and teacher’s aides.

Many schools and teachers rely on Teacher Aides for help in their classrooms.  Teachers Aides allow the teachers more time for lesson planning as well as instructing students.  They also help to support the children with their learning and are able to help provide additional (one on one) attention.  Teacher Aides also grade tests, check homework and keep health and attendance records while also instructing, assisting and supervising students.

In the spring of 2010, Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen (RMAE) launched a proactive campaign called “Close the Gap”.  The purpose was to raise enough money so RMAE would not be forced to terminate any positions.

With the summer coming to a close, Jefferson County School District budget cuts looming on the horizon, and not enough contributions during the “Close the Gap” campaign, Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen (RMAE) had to make the difficult decision turn to turn their 6 Teachers Aides positions to half-time.

A ripple went out in the RMAE community.  Over the summer, many teachers, parents and RMAE Staff collaborated on how they could save these jobs and bring back to full time these critical positions.

In early August, and after much deliberation, the RMAE Board had the privilege of announcing to the 6 Teachers Aides that they had full time jobs.

The RMAE Board elected to use the “Close the Gap” funds it had to bring back the 6 full-time Teachers Aides positions.  Dan Cohen, Director of Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen commented, “We’re really excited to have our Aides back.  They play such a critical role in the development of the students.  We simply had to find a way to bring them back.”

The students, staff and administration of RMAE are all very excited about the decision.  They are also hopeful that a new school year would help them to raise the remaining $12,000 it needed to have the Teachers Aides back on for the full school year.
