In terms of average salaries for the whole of the UK, London based IT workers can expect to earn 14% more than the mean, with those in the South East typically receiving an extra 10.1%. Regions where the pay fell below the national benchmark included the Midlands, the North East and the North West, where workers were paid 4.8% less, 6% less and 6.7% less respectively.
A similar survey conducted by the same IT recruitment agency back in 2008, shows the region displaying the greatest disparity in the time period is the South East, which has risen from 3% higher than the UK average in 2008 up to 10.1% in 2010.
It is thought the shift is as a result of a growing reluctance amongst workers to gravitate towards London for work and seek out areas where they might be able to enjoy a higher quality of life. Technology firms are also becoming less inclined to locate their hub in and around the capital, preferring the transportation links synonymous with the South East.
The recent proliferation of online IT recruitment agencies has enabled candidates to find employment locally, and technology companies to source skilled workers without the need for a central London location.
Of course as anyone living in London or the South East will be all too aware, the cost of living is high, far higher than in the North of the country. Housing costs alone in the capital can far outweigh the prices you can expect to pay anywhere else in the country. Although it has long been known workers in London are being paid more than those in other parts of the country, it is now clear this pattern has spread throughout the South East, with some workers earning over 15% more than their Northern counterparts.
