Swain is highly aware of the concerns from Muslim Americans in post 9/11 America, and she contests that Islamophobia doesn't exist as most people portray. There is skepticism over radical movements in the Muslim religion, but not a fear of all Muslims as most portray.
She offers a solution to the problem. Muslim leaders in America should stand up and condone the radical behavior, and stand strong with America.
Swain also touches on the Mosque that was to be built on the Ground Zero site, and the outcry from Americans that most Muslims felt stemmed from Islamophobia in America.
"Muslims don't need to fear for their lives in America. Nobody is out to hurt them directly because of their religious beliefs. American's don't want Sharia Law in the country and we are against the attacks against us, which no country would tolerate. That does not mean Americans are Islamophobic"
Additionally Swain has written a Op-Ed column that touch on religion in America, and how it's being slowly suppressed for the Tennessean.
Swain discusses how Vanderbilt University is flirting with religious suppression, and its effects could have a profound impact on religion on campus.
"If this policy is implemented, it will make it harder for the students to have on-campus fellowship with like-minded believers and it will make it more difficult for them to grow in or even maintain their faith while on campus. The policy sends a clear message to students: religious associations are not a valued or respected part of the university's ideological diversity. " says Swain
