Sept. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Spring is almost here which means many working professionals are now back in their regular routine after a summer of trips and vacations.  This also means that people who have been consistently working out now have to get into the habit of exercising again.  Many of the working population find it difficult to get back into this habit due to their busy schedules.  But according to Anna Dornier, a fitness trainer at Transform FX Fitness in Concord, busy people have many choices when it comes to getting in shape in a short period of time.  “If you have been meaning to get into a fitness routine but just do not have the time or do not know where to start, you may just need the right fitness program,” says Dornier.
Here are 6 tips she shares when looking for a fitness program that gives you the most bang for your time:

Tip # 1 It must be goal oriented. Knowing that a fitness program is designed to help you reach your goals is critical to how fast you will get results.  For instance, if you’re goal is weight loss and the program you joined is designed for body builders who want big muscles, chances are, you will not reach your goal or you will not like how you will look.  Make sure to be upfront about your fitness goals and ask if the program you’re looking into supports your goals.  Better yet, ask them for proof they have helped people with similar goals as you have.

Tip #2 It must include strength training. .  The first exercise most people do when starting an exercise program is running.  While running has many heart benefits, strength training should be a priority for overall health especially if you’re trying to lose weight.  Muscles are active tissue which means they burn more calories.  Research has also shown that people who perform strength training workouts burn calories up to 36 hours after their workout.  In addition, a strong core which can only be developed through strength training is a must for performing daily activities such as walking, getting out of bed/car, carrying a baby, etc.

Tip # 3 It must include nutrition coaching.  There’s a popular saying among fitness experts which says, “You can’t out-train a bad diet.”  It’s true.  Regular exercise by itself is not sufficient for losing weight and improving health.  Nutrition is huge part of the healthy lifestyle.  Nutrition affects your daily energy levels, how you perform during exercise, how well your body recovers and pretty much every moment of your life.  Most fitness programs only offer either exercise or nutrition components, not both.  But, because exercise will help you lose inches and your diet will help you lose the pounds, a well-designed fitness program should have both for maximum results and health benefit.

Tip #4  It must increase your cardiovascular endurance.  “Improving cardiovascular endurance does not always have to involve running,” says Dornier.  You can increase your cardiovascular endurance by performing strength training exercises that target multiple joints like squats, lunges, push ups, etc and perform them right after another with very little rest.  This helps keep your heart rate up during exercise which makes your heart stronger.  Doing exercises this way can only take up 20-45 minutes which saves you time because you are doing cardiovascular and strength training exercises all in one effective workout.

Tip # 5 It must provide you support and accountability outside of the workout sessions. To be a smart consumer, you have to ask for more value for your time and money.  When you hire fitness trainers, make sure they give you all of the above plus support and accountability even when you are not working out with them.  If you meet them 3 times a week for one hour, you want them to keep you accountable the rest of the time.  This accountability and support can come in the form of checking food journals, providing motivational messages, and fitness assessments.

Tip #6 Have fun!  A fitness expert in fitness and lifestyle makeovers, Anna Dornier has been helping local residents love exercising again and teaching them how to eat foods that nourish and satisfy them.  Her bootcamp and nutrition clients get support from each other and her staff at Transform FX Fitness Studio in downtown Concord.
