QC Software’s Guide to Building a Strong Support Team for Higher Warehouse Productivity

A well-qualified workforce is essential for warehouse profitability. QC Software executive suggests creating a culture of excellence, implementing standards, measuring performance, providing feedback, ongoing training, and providing incentives.

Sept. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- How do you improve warehouse profitability without spending a fortune? One way to do that is to invest in your employees. As labor costs keep rising, it makes sense to attract and retain good employees at all levels of your organization.

“It’s been said that employees are a company’s greatest asset and for good reason.  With a knowledgeable and motivated workforce, you can improve every aspect of your warehouse operation. And effective management is the key.  Even in the best of times, companies must find ways to stay competitive. Building a strong support team will improve your ROI and increase your chances for success, which is especially important in a period of slow economic growth,” states Rich Hite, President of QC Software, a leading provider of warehouse control software for fifteen years.

A good place to start is to create a culture of excellence. Promote individual accountability in your organization and provide reasonable performance expectations for all managers and floor personnel.

Implement standards and measure job performance. Use performance metrics to determine how well employees are meeting their goals. Use this as a guideline for additional training and be sure to provide regular feedback.

Train, train, and then train some more.  A well-educated workforce understands not only their individual job functions, but the company’s operation and goals, proper use of the equipment, and safety precautions. Training improves productivity, reduces turnover and improves employee satisfaction. Since the warehouse is dynamic, make sure to provide ongoing training.

Create the right environment. Make sure employees have a sense of ownership in the company. Solicit their opinions on workplace improvement. People who work with the equipment and interact with other departments on a daily basis know what works and what doesn’t, and they can quickly identify potential problems.

Provide appropriate incentives. Make sure you have a well-defined incentive program based on procedures and standards. Incentives will improve productivity, but make sure safety and quality are not being compromised. Keep in mind that eliminating incentives can be difficult since it usually lowers morale.
