By: Spencer Bisgaard Miller’s presentation focused on six core areas cooperatives need to address that will take the smart grid from a concept to a reality: customer acceptance, computational complexity, communication, interoperability, cyber security and making the business case, with customer acceptance being the highest priority. Miller has over thirty years of experience and in 2008 joined the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) where he lead a $68 million smart grid demonstration project in an effort to advance the smart grid to an even smarter grid. Miller holds a Ph.D. in systems engineering from the University of Virginia. “Craig is well respected in the smart grid community, and has a sincere connection with the electric utility executives in attendance. His passion and excitement is contagious and has encouraged both our VIP utility guests and technology vendors to be smart and proactive in their approach to advancing the grid. He has captured the concept of what RSGS is all about and has set the table for our most productive summit to date” said, Bill Booth, general manager, HLW Expos. Miller’s keynote address was followed by a welcome reception that allowed the utility guests to interact with the some of the top smart grid companies in the industry with live music and other entertainment. The presentations continue today with Brett Kilbourne, Deputy General Counsel, Utilities Telecom Council (UTC), James Hong, Director, Application Engineering, S&C Electric and Mark Hura, Global Smart Grid Commercial Leader, GE Energy. The RSGS event has a unique format focused on business development through private boardroom meetings where 100+ Rural Electric Cooperative Executives aggregate to discuss the latest technological advances and solutions in smart grid technologies, with participating vendors including: Avnet, GE Digital Energy, Grid 2020, Landis+Gyr, MeterSense, and Wet Monroe Partners among others.
