Sept. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- A Gas Safety Trust report highlighting the dangers of carbon monoxide, and ways to eradicate it, has been praised by Ravenheat Managing Director Louis Pickersgill.
“We welcome any initiative that helps to make this industry safer,” said Mr Pickersgill. “It is vital that people get the right sort of help and advice from their installers. Not every boiler needs replacing, but every boiler does need to be properly serviced and maintained.
“Ravenheat only deals with registered, reputable installers, who help people, make the right choices for their home. I’m acutely aware of the need for the elderly to get the correct information so they don’t compromise their safety in an effort to save money.
“If funds can be found to help the elderly and vulnerable members of society with annual servicing and boiler replacements that would be a major step in the right direction,” said Mr Pickersgill.
The Gas Safety Trust report highlighted a number of key areas that the industry should focus its attention on.
The elderly gas user - The number of gas users aged 70 and above continues to rise. The report said there may be a case for introducing financial help for the elderly to replace old inefficient boilers or even to help with annual servicing.
Private landlords responsibilities - Significant progress had been made to bring down the risks to tenants with private landlords. Annual safety checks on appliances are mandatory but perhaps this should be extended to annual servicing of all appliances.
The age of boilers - Boilers more than 21 years-old still present an issue. Older boilers can remain operating safely for many years if serviced and maintained regularly. But the fear is that these checks are not always being done. The report suggests an incentive scheme should be considered to encourage people to increase safety and energy efficiency by replacing their boiler.
Surveillance of unregistered installers - The report also called on the industry to help drive out the unregistered fitters from the industry because this will help cut the number of reported carbon monoxide incidents.
