Gaia is the name given by James Lovelock to the gigantic organism that has evolved here on Planet Earth. It is the mountains, plains, forests, grasslands, deserts, rivers and oceans. It is the climate and ocean currents. It is the wide-ranging biodiversity that regulates much of what happens. It is the wide range of creatures big and small that have played their part in the complexity of operations in this organism for eons.
