New Book About Frisco’s Mining Past Solidifies Frisco as Colorado’s Proverbial Mountain Town

Frisco and the Ten Mile Canyon book release and signing event on October 7, 2011

Sept. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- FRISCO, Colo. - Sept. 19, 2011 - The Town of Frisco Historic Park & Museum has partnered with historian and author Sandie F. Mather to produce the new book Frisco and the Ten Mile Canyon – slated for release October 7, 2011.

Frisco and the Ten Mile Canyon tells the story Frisco as a once-thriving railroad town that served as the gateway to the towns and mines of the Ten Mile Canyon.  Beginning in 1879, mines produced silver, gold, and other minerals while experiencing the usual boom and bust cycles.  The mines eventually dried up and closed, curtailing rail service in the area. Frisco and nearby towns suffered as a result.  While the towns in the canyon became memories, Frisco experienced a rebirth and revitalization when the recreational landscape and economy began to boom during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Author Sandra F. Mather, professor emerita at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, arrived in Summit County in 1980. Since then, she has written numerous books about the county’s natural and human landscapes. Sandra provides historic lectures, such as the history of the Dillon Reservoir, in Summit County throughout the summer.

A majority of the photographs and images for this volume originated from the Frisco Historic Park & Museum archives and have never been published. Other photograph and image sources includ the Colorado Historical Society, Denver Public Library, the private collections of Peggy Alexander, Ed and Nancy Bathke, Dave Cattanni, Bill Eloe, Bill Fountain, Todd Hackett, R.H. Kindig-Tom Klinger, Clair Dungan-Tom Klinger, John Manley, Bob Schoppe and the Denver, South Park and Pacific Historical Society, and the author.

This is the first book published on Frisco history since 1984.

Frisco and the Ten Mile Canyon is part of The Images of America series that celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across America.  Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. The Town of Frisco is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.

“Museum staff is excited to endorse a quality history book, which is not only comprehensive but provides a pictorial journey of Frisco’s history.  This will be a fundamental companion guide to anyone’s visit to Frisco.”

The Town of Frisco will celebrate the book release on Friday, October 7, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Frisco Schoolhouse Museum.  The celebration will include a lecture by the author at 3:30 p.m. with light refreshments.  The reception is open to the public.
