The art gallery exists as the main point of sale for most fine artists, the interface between the public and their art. However, is this still the most efficient method of selling art in today's connected world? Please join us for a thoughtful panel discussion presented by General Assembly and moderated by Annika Connor, which will focus on the place of technology, pop-up shops, retail venues, and pop culture as alternative vehicles for promoting and selling art.

The panel will bring together innovators and entrepreneurs whose everyday work explores the many ways in which art can be displayed outside of gallery walls and brought to the forefront of the public’s collective memory. Discussion will center around the ways in which the internet has become a venue for showcasing artwork, pop-up curation, and the immersion of fine art into everyday life.

The Featured Panelist:

Richard Phillips’s strikingly distinctive paintings derive their tension from an unsettling blend of lurid imagery and a refined, almost academic painting style.  As a world famous artist Phillips works can be seen in museums across the globe as well as at White Cube in London and Gagosian Gallery in New York.

Fascinated by pop culture, Phillips steps beyond the gallery walls and imbeds his art in the very world that intrigues him by having his paintings featured on TV.  Phillips work is particularly prominent on the hit show Gossip Girl where the art itself sets the tone for culture in this sexy series.  Referencing this aesthetic overlap, Phillips most recent show

‘Most Wanted’ at London’s White Cube gallery selected ten of America’s most instantly recognizable celebrities from the realms of television, cinema and music to create distilled portraits of young, powerful stars exhibiting their rehearsed, red-carpet expressions.  Phillips’ two-metre high canvases of Chace Crawford, Kristen Stewart, Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Momsen, Dakota Fanning, Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Robert Pattinson lined the gallery walls.

Most recently, Phillips has explored his fascination with celebrity culture by creating a several of short films staring Hollywood it girls "Sasha Grey" and "Lindsay Lohan".  Both of these Phillips films, screened this summer at the 54th international exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

As a part of this panel series, Phillips will discuss this body of work, the role of pop culture in the contemporary art world, his most recent film projects, and his thoughts as an artist stepping out of the gallery and into alternative spaces.
