Sept. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Charlotte, NC (September 19, 2011) – RSM McGladrey and McGladrey and Pullen, LLP, which combined, operate under the McGladrey brand as one of the nation’s largest accounting, tax and business consulting firms, have been recognized on the Top 100 2011 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and honored with the 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility.

The prestigious Sloan award, part of the national When Work Works project, recognizes employers of all sizes and types across the country for their use of flexibility as an effective workplace strategy to increase business and employee success. Annual rankings for the Best Adoption Friendly Workplaces list are determined by an analysis of adoption benefits – such as financial reimbursement and paid leave – that companies make available to their employees.

“At McGladrey, we strive to understand our employees’ needs and are honored to receive these recognitions for the flexibility and benefits we provide,” said Joe Adams, managing partner and CEO with McGladrey & Pullen. “A career in professional services is fulfilling but also very demanding. Our culture of helping employees achieve their career objectives and their goals outside of the workplace creates a supportive environment where people want to work hard and provide high value to our clients. It’s a winning proposition for everyone involved.”

The Dave Thomas Foundation compiles results from survey data collected from nearly 500 U.S. employers and partners with Employee Benefit News, a SourceMedia publication that is the leading source of information for benefits decision makers, to announce the winners.

McGladrey (http://www.mcgladrey.com/) offers employees reimbursement for up to $5,000 for adoption-related expenses, and provides up to six weeks of paid time off for adoptive parents. In addition to traditional adoption benefits, the firms offer New Parent Coaching, Coach-on-Call and Employee Assistance programs to help employees and their families adjust to adoption and other major life changes.

While this comprehensive support for adoptive families ensured the firms’ spot on this year’s Adoption Friendly Workplaces list, workplace flexibility — such as flextime, part-time work and compressed workweeks — helps the firms attract and retain employees, and earned McGladrey this year’s Sloan Award.

“Our research consistently finds that employees in effective and flexible workplaces have greater engagement on the job and greater desire to stay with their organization,” said Ellen Galinsky, president of Families and Work Institute (FWI), a research think tank on workforce and workplace trends that administers the awards. “In addition, they report lower stress levels and better overall health.”

The Sloan Awards are unique for their rigorous, two-step selection process, which involves an evaluation of employers’ flexibility programs and practices, and a confidential employee survey. All applicants are measured against national norms from FWI’s National Study of Employers.

“As a recipient of the 2011 Sloan Award, McGladrey ranks in the top 20% of employers nationally in terms of its programs, policies and culture for creating an effective and flexible workplace,” said Galinsky. “In addition, what makes this honor so special is that their employees have corroborated this, affirming that it is indeed an effective and flexible workplace.”
