McDugald Steele has been awarded a 2011 GRAND AWARD from PLANET -Professional Landcare Network  for their garden design and construction work at St. Martins Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas.

The Mcdugald-Steele design team studied historical cloister gardens and created a design that incorporated all of the garden elements the client requested into an existing space created during the church construction.  The focal point of the design is a central limestone carved fountain fabricated in Texas. The stone fountain bowl and surrounding benches are carved with similar motifs from the church’s icons. The plantings include parterre boxwood plantings surrounding the quad and lawn panels. Florals and herbs are planted here to resemble ancient cloister garden uses.

The design & construction provides the church with tent anchors for specific tent layouts and special religious events. The overall design creates a calm, contemplative experience resembling cloisters of ages past.
