Scottish Town Hit by Spate of Arson Attacks

Firefighters were called to three separate arson attacks in Kirkcaldy, Scotland over the weekend. Incidents at a factory, a disused church and a park were reported, with the Police appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sept. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- The first attack involved three bins being set alight in Beveridge Park. This was closely followed by a blaze in the roof of a factory. Asbestos was discovered in the building and a decontamination team was also called in. Fire crews spent five hours and used an aerial rescue platform and a thermal imaging camera to bring the fire under control.

While still at the scene of the factory blaze, a third fire was reported at a church in Dysart, to the east of Kirkcaldy.

Bert Stewart, Group Manager of Operations Delivery at Fife Fire and Rescue, said:

“These incidents are not untypical of the types of fire we deal with routinely, but they can, depending on other activity, put pressure on what is a finite resource.

“We have been very successful in delivering community fire safety education, with a resulting drop in fires. But, there are still a minority who appear to go out their way to cause problems by wilful fire-raising.

“Every time a fire engine is sent to a fire which has been set maliciously – even litter bin fires – it deprives the community of the service for a significant period. This may mean a delayed response to a serious fire, such as a house fire with people trapped.”

Angus Nicholl, Managing Director at Peter Greig & Co, said:

“I was extremely concerned when I got the call but luckily we are not going to lose any time. The fire brigade were exemplary – I would like to extend my thanks to them.”
