Sept. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Through a $190,000 grant by Planet Aid, a U.S.-based nonprofit charitable organization, to ADPP, a local NGO, clothing was distributed to 19,914 families in rural areas. The funds contributed to the costs of shipping and distributing clothing from May through August 2011. ADPP staff, community volunteers, and local government representatives distributed clothing to 13 municipalities in Huambo, Kwanza Norte, Malanje, and Uige provinces.

Each family received an assortment of approximately 30-35 items of clothing for adults and children. The recipients included extended families, the elderly, the unemployed, and subsistence farmers. According to ADPP Angola, most of the families reside in remote areas and lack the means to purchase used clothing. Surviving on less than a dollar a day per capita, many families are unable to secure basic necessities beyond food and shelter.

Since 1986, ADPP has worked together with local communities and the Government of Angola to build a more unified, equitable, and just country in which all people can live healthy and productive lives.  ADPP works in 16 of the country’s 18 provinces and directly engages more than 8,000 people in work or study on a daily basis.  ADPP reaches hundreds of thousands of others through community-based projects in health, education and community development. ADPP Angola is co-founder and member of the Federation of Associations connected to the International Humana People to People Movement.

Planet Aid is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that collects and recycles used clothing and shoes and supports international development projects. It is registered with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as a private voluntary organization (PVO). In 2010, Planet Aid collected 95 million pounds of clothing and donated $12 million in direct and in-kind support to 40 international development programs in lesser-developed nations.
