Sept. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- So what fish can live with bettas?

Before you decide to add more fish in your betta tank, it is best to do some research first about what fish can live with bettas so you wouldn’t cause any fish tragedy in your aquarium. Betta fish known as the Siamese fighting fish are very aggressive and they are very territorial when it comes to their environment. They will attack anyone who has more colourful fins than they do. They are very vain creatures themselves and you must always consider these traits before you decide to add more fish your betta tank. You must also bear in mind that betta fish are solitary and they do not ever get lonely in a tank. But if you feel like your aquarium is not looking so happy with only one kind of fish inside, then you can add the following in your betta tank:

White cloud minnows, angel fish, Platy, danios, plecos, small catfish, corydoras, rasbora, cory casts and otos.

White cloud mountain minnows are very calm  and peaceful or they wouldn’t be called the Buddhist monks in the fish world. They won’t even bother to nip or bite your betta plus the fact that they can run away from trouble due so easily since they can move fast. They are also very inexpensive and they are tough to boot.

Bristlenose Plecosomus is the “safe” fish to be with bettas. They are the same size as the Siamese fighting fish. There are so many types of plecos so be very aware that you are buying bristlenose because the other plecos wouldn’t be safe with your betta fish.
Corydoras catfish are low bottom feeders and they move fast. Not to mention the fact that their colors are dull so they won’t post as a threat to your betta fish.

Apple snails are colourful and they can live in the same water condition and environment as your bettas. They can very well handle a betta aggression because they are big enough so bettas cannot hurt or kill them.

But you must avoid the following fish – they can never do well with bettas:
Tiger barbs, guppies, silver dollars, large tetras, guaramis and of course, other male bettas.

When introducing your other fish to the betta tank, you must observe the tank community for a couple of days, okay? This is because a new fish will always disrupt the tank – it is a fact that you must always bear in mind.

There will be a few biting and nipping that could happen because this is the way a fish greets a new friend in the tank. However if you see some major fin damage, then it is best to remove the other fish from your betta tank and transfer it in another tank.
Fishes just like us have different temperaments and personality just like us human beings. So by keeping a close watch on your aquarium, you can avoid fish fight trouble in a big way. Fish fighting can cause you the life of one fish or two: be responsible.
