The app primarily accumulates everyday figures such as daily/hourly rate, parking expenses and mileage assembling data for end of year accounts. The application developer Jay Jeetley said “As a locum myself, I found it extremely tedious writing up my expenses at the end of the financial year. From my ten year experience in the West Midlands, it was apparent that locums complain of two main problems: the time taken calculating payments and documenting events as they happen. The majority of locums use smart-phones for emails and web access so it was obvious that Locum log would be an efficient tool to track income and expenses on the go.”
Applications like these will eventually become common place with professionals, research from Park associates forecasts that over 2 billion people worldwide will own at least one smart phone in 2015, representing a growth in unit sales of over 175% from 2010. Accounting apps especially will appeal to professionals due to the time consumption of paperwork. However not everyone feels safe with documenting sensitive data in such an open setting. This is where the developers of the app have introduced two security measures firstly a pass code login to enable only the user to have access and secondly non-web based activity i.e. storage that is native to the phone itself and avoidance of any cloud computing action. The migration of accounting applications into a Cloud computing model is still being avoided by businesses and professionals with only 20% of cloud computing users utilising the service. The Locum log developers have insisted that sensitive accounting data shouldn’t play a part in the cloud until the security of this new innovation is 100% hacker free.
Other features of the app include documenting pending payments, saving locations where one has worked and exporting files in excel spreadsheet format to accountants.
The excel export feature will help locum dentists collate all their data whenever they want, once it is in excel format appropriate formulas can be introduced to help calculations.
Although this app is currently only available to iPhone users, an android version is being developed for launch early next year.
