Sept. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- It would appear that being promoted might not necessarily come with as many perks as one might expect, as a new study by a leading online independent travel agency in the UK has revealed that lower level employees go on holiday more than those in senior and management roles.

The study was carried out by www.sunshine.co.uk, as part of ongoing research into the holiday habits of people around the UK. 2,036 people in full-time employment around the UK took part in the study and respondents were asked questions about their holiday allowance and whether or not they used it to its full advantage.

Respondents were first asked what level of seniority they held within their workplace; split into lower level, senior, management and business owners. Of those responding to the poll, 31% classed themselves as ‘lower level’ employees, 24% as ‘senior’ employees and 29% as ‘management’ within their company. The remaining 16% were company owners.

Sunshine.co.uk then asked each respondent ‘How many times a year do you go on holiday?’ According to the poll, the average ‘lower level’ worker goes on holiday ‘twice a year’, whilst those holding senior positions claimed to only go away ‘once a year’.

Similarly, those in management roles claimed to holiday, on average, ‘once a year’ and company owners, despite being the most well-paid, went on holiday ‘once every two years’ on average.

The respondents were further questioned about their attitudes towards taking holiday. Two thirds, 67%, of the business owners polled said they felt they had ‘no time for holidays’, whilst 51% of those in management roles said the same. Only a third of those in a senior role felt they had ‘no time’ for holidays, whilst just 18% of lower level workers said the same.

When asked, ‘Do you use all of the holiday allocated to you by your employer, if applicable?’ 97% of those in lower level positions said ‘yes’. 82% of those in senior roles said that they used up all their holiday, but the minority of those in management roles, 41%, said they used all the holiday time they were given.

Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, commented on the findings;

“I think it’s pretty shocking that so many people in management positions are missing out on holidays. It’s important to take time off work to relax and take some time out of the office.

“However, with a better title at work comes more responsibility and, normally, longer hours and more work. Therefore, it can be hard to find the right time to take a week or two off, without seemingly disrupting things in the workplace and causing more stress for yourself. Despite this, not taking a holiday will do you more harm than good at work, so it’s very important to get away, whatever your position at work!”
