Creating accessible Joomla! websites - find out how at Joomla!Day UK 2011

Sept. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Since the Disability Discrimination Act came into force, organisations have had to consider the accessibility of all their services to those with disabilities - including their websites.

While creating a website can be a fairly easy process, ensuring it is accessible to as many people as possible is often overlooked, or considered after the site has gone live.  
Joomla! is a great content management system. It's easy to use and can help with the development of accessible content. However, some knowledge of how to properly use HTML, CSS and other new accessible development methods – like applying WAI-ARIA in your projects also helps.

Joshue O'Connor - speaker at Joomla!Day UK 2011 on the Designers Line, presenting 'Accessibility, Joomla!, Markup Languages and you' is Senior Accessibility Consultant with the NCBI Centre for Inclusive Technology and is a leading expert on accessibility and digital inclusion. He is skilled in the design and development of accessible websites and applications due to many years of working with people with disabilities.

He is an invited expert and member of several W3C working groups and has written research papers on topics relating to accessibility and web development as well as a book on Joomla! called "Joomla Accessibility'".

Joshue explains that while accessibility often seems very difficult to understand and implement, it doesn't have to be. There are many great tools and resources available for designers and developers that can enable them to create accessible content – if some simple principles are followed.

Joshue O'Connor will discuss some of these techniques and resources, as well as what the future holds as HTML5 comes on-stream and what it will mean for web developers and users of Assistive Technologies alike.
