By: Victoria Sanchez De Alba ‘Step Out, Step Up’ to Raise Funds for Children Locally and Around the World Keeping with its core belief of “changing the world one child at a time” Moms Against Poverty (MAP), a non-profit organization made up of a small group of mothers from the Bay Area invites you to Step Out, Step Up at its 4th annual dinner-dance and auction fundraiser. The event will take place at the Metreon, 4th floor,101 4th Street, San Francisco on Sept. 17, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. This year’s fundraiser features music by Bay Area DJ Dr. T, dancing and an authentic Mediterranean cuisine. Proceeds from the benefit, will help with MAP’s ongoing projects in the Bay Area and around the world. For the past few years, MAP has been a strong supporter in the training of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers in the Silicon Valley. It has also provided food baskets for children and their families at San Francisco’s Bryant Child Development Center as well as the Bret Harte Child Development Center. In addition, MAP: • Provides breakfast for economically disadvantaged students at Fremont’s Warm Springs Elementary School. • Provides funds to Burlingame-based “My New Red Shoes” for the back-to-school gift bags for Bay Area’s homeless children. • Supports 25 teen moms from Tri-Valley Area (Dublin, Livermore, and Pleasanton) by providing them with the resources to complete high school, attend college and support their children with preschool learning tools. • Supports 230 teens in the Silicon Valley CASA’s ‘Teen Advocacy Program’ which provides training so they can transition from the foster care system to independent living. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP), nearly 15 million children in the United States – 21% of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level – $22,050 a year for a family of four. Research shows that, on average, families need an income of about twice that level to cover basic expenses. Using this standard, 42% of children live in low-income families. “At MAP, it is our core belief that other than food and shelter, every child deserves a chance to learn and to hope for a brighter future regardless of where they are born,” said Delfarib Fanaie, Executive Director, Moms Against Poverty. “While our work extends across the globe, we are also very aware of the needs of children living in poverty right here in the Bay Area. That is why we partner with various organizations throughout the area. And this fundraiser helps us continue our work both here and abroad.” The organization operates in the United States, Iran, Cambodia, Afghanistan and Africa. Tickets are $85 per person and $50 for students 18 and older with valid student ID, and can be purchased online at: http://momsagainstpoverty.eventbrite.com/ About Moms Against Poverty: MAP is a 501(c)(3) grassroots, volunteer-based nonprofit organization created in 2008 by a handful of concerned mothers passionate about the life of every child born to the human race. Since its inception, the organization has expanded to include a diverse group of volunteers who want to make a difference. MAP is dedicated to serving and supporting children living in poverty in the U.S. and around the world. Its vision is to nurture and educate these children to their fullest potential so they can one day contribute and be leaders in their communities, and breaking the cycle of poverty. This mission is carried out by developing and renovating schools and orphanages; providing food, education, health care and basic needs to these children one community at a time.
