Sept. 13, 2011 - PRLog -- Grants Pass, Ore.--Considering being a volunteer chaplain? Would you like to help patients and families with spiritual support in a pastoral care setting? The Spiritual Care Department at Three Rivers Community Hospital (http://www.asante.org/TRCH) is offering a workshop for people interested in volunteer chaplaincy.

“I have found that being a volunteer chaplain has been one of the most meaningful opportunities in my life,” said Jamie Wilson, a Spiritual Care Volunteer at TRCH for eight years. “I have gotten far more out of it than I’ve put into it.”

One does not need to be ordained or even a church leader to be a good spiritual care volunteer at Three Rivers Community Hospital, explained Chaplain Sandi Richard’. “We are looking for dedicated individuals who love people, are spiritually grounded, are good listeners, and have a sense of having been called by God to this kind of ministry,” she said.

The training is free, and participants will make a deep exploration of their spiritual understanding in preparation to help others exercise theirs.

“By listening, we bring a healing presence of hope and faith, for out of the abundance of the heart flows the life dream,” said Betty Steward, a volunteer chaplain. “Hope gives wings to life and brings a ‘fire’ to rise in our hearts.”

The two-session Interfaith Spiritual Caregiver Training occurs Monday, October 17 and Tuesday, October 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day with a noon break for a no-host lunch.

The class will cover all phases of this public ministry including: Compassionate Listening; Spiritual Assessment; Spiritual Diversity; Spiritual Response; and Death and Dying.

Candidates must speak with Chaplain Sandi Richard’ in advance for complete information, and to talk about the role of a chaplain and why they are interested in this ministry.

Registrations are due Oct 10, 2011, in person, by phone or email. Space may be limited, so please register early.
