As fire fighters get these fires under control across the state, more and more families are returning to their homes. Unfortunately some property owners are returning to completely destroyed homes and businesses. Many others discover properties not directly touched by flames, but that may have extensive smoke damage.
Wildfires can produce an enormous amount of smoke that infiltrates buildings. This smoke is filled with combustion by-products that include soot, ash and char. The smoke can have damaging effects to both property and to humans breathing the smoke filled air.
As people in these impacted areas return to their normal lives, many are faced with insurance claims dealing with the smoke damage found inside the properties. At the forefront in these efforts are thousands of indoor air quality (IAQ) and environmental professionals working closely with insurance companies and remediation and reconstruction professionals to return these properties to pre-fire conditions.
“The services provided by IAQ and environmental professionals are crucial as many of these smoke damaged properties require testing to prove there are problems with smoke residues,” reported Brian Mcfarland, Vice President of Legends Environmental Insurance Services, a leading provider of insurance coverage to the indoor air quality (IAQ), environmental and restoration industries. “If contamination issues from this soot, ash and char are not addressed properly future building occupants could be at risk.”
Legends has sponsored a public outreach video on indoor environmental hazards following a fire that can be seen at:
