With around 1 in 3 people using discount codes and deals when it comes to making purchases online, coupon code site Get Coupons decided to see what types of code customers actually prefer and will spark the customer into making a sale. During a poll carried out in August 2011 Get Coupons asked its visitors which types of codes made them more likely to make a purchase when it was on offer. The choices given were between free delivery codes, money off or percentage off codes, and free gift codes. These are the 3 most common discounts and deals given out by retailers when promoting a product or deal offline. The results of the month long poll was that 78% of the people asked said they would be more likely to purchase an item when money off or a percentage off is being offered. Free shipping and Free gifts came in with just 11% of the vote each meaning people would rather save money and wait a little longer for their product then get a discount and would rather chose a cheaper shipping option. Customers would also prefer a cheaper product overall than a full price product with any extra bonuses or gifts thrown in. As customers get more savvy in this economic climate this could be leading to the rise in customers trying to save pennies wherever possible.
With coupon code and discount code use on the rise every month and predicted to keep growing year on year, knowing how to get those customers using coupons to part with their money is more vital than ever to keep the economy ticking over. Making sure customers are getting the deals the want provides retailers with the knowledge they are not just discouting product but actually encouraging sales. It would seem for now that putting efforts in to offer cheaper products overall is the way to encourage sales rather than with added extras or waving shipping charges.
